RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
